One Click LCA Building Assessments: From BIM Quantities to Reviewable Results

Importing a model quickly is useful; importing the right scope is more important. A building information model may contain excellent geometry while omitting finishes, fixings or services required by an assessment brief. Treat the route from BIM or a bill of quantities to One Click LCA as an engineering handover, not a one-button calculation.

Set scope before exporting quantities

Agree the assessment purpose, scheme, study period, building area convention and life-cycle modules. Identify which elements are included and which are excluded. A structural model is not automatically a whole-building inventory. Assign someone to fill the gap between the exported model and the agreed assessment scope.

Clean the quantity schedule

One Click LCA supports quantity imports with mapped fields such as name, quantity and unit. Its import guidance includes a separate resource-mapping step. A successful upload does not confirm that every material has been interpreted correctly. See the documented import process.

Our recommended pre-import checks are straightforward: keep a unique row reference, remove summary totals that would duplicate detail rows, distinguish assembly quantities from layer quantities and preserve the unit used in the source. Archive the original export so later reviewers can trace corrections.

Audit the biggest material flows first

Compare model totals against independent schedules or a quantity surveyor’s take-off where available. If the concrete volume or glazing area looks implausible, investigate before analysing percentage savings. A technically correct carbon factor cannot rescue a duplicated quantity. Spot-check at least one representative assembly from drawing to exported quantity to mapped material.

Handle gaps openly

Maintain an exclusions and assumptions register. At an early stage, the team may need provisional quantities or datasets; those should be visible and scheduled for replacement when specifications improve. Avoid treating an absent model object as proof that the physical material is absent. Conversely, do not add a generic allowance over a detailed quantity without checking for double counting.

Control option studies

Clone a checked baseline for each design option and change only the intended variables. An illustrative comparison of structural systems should hold the assessment boundary and area basis constant. Record when a lower result arises from a genuine specification change and when it comes from improved information. Both may be useful, but they tell different stories.

Make the handover reproducible

Deliver the result together with its input revision, assumptions, module coverage and remaining gaps. Use the appropriate One Click LCA tool for the project’s reporting route; available features and licences must be checked rather than assumed. For product-EPD work, use the separate manufacturer workflow. For HPDs, maintain an ingredient-disclosure process outside the building carbon model. A clear report lets the next reviewer understand what was actually assessed.
