"DesignBuilder vs EnergyPlus vs OpenStudio" is one of the most common questions in building energy modeling — but it's slightly the wrong framing. The key thing to understand: EnergyPlus is the engine, and DesignBuilder and OpenStudio are interfaces to it. Here's how they actually relate, and how to choose.
EnergyPlus — the engine
EnergyPlus is the U.S. Department of Energy's free, extensively validated simulation engine. It does the physics: heat balance, HVAC, loads, daylighting and more, hour by hour. On its own it has no graphical interface — models are defined in a text input file (IDF). That gives total control, which is great for scripting and research but slow and error-prone for everyday project work.
OpenStudio — the open platform
OpenStudio (from NREL) is a free software development kit and application that sits on top of EnergyPlus. It adds a model format, an application, geometry import, and — most powerfully — "measures": reusable scripts that automate edits and parametric studies. It's the go-to for teams that want automation, batch runs and a free, open toolchain.
DesignBuilder — the commercial front-end
DesignBuilder is a polished commercial interface for EnergyPlus. It provides fast 3D geometry, rich libraries, HVAC modeling, daylighting, CFD, optimization and reporting in one productive environment, with commercial support. For consultants delivering projects to deadline, that productivity and reliability often justify the licence cost.
Side-by-side
| Tool | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| EnergyPlus | Free simulation engine (text IDF) | Scripting, research, full control |
| OpenStudio | Free platform + measures over EnergyPlus | Automation, parametric studies, open workflows |
| DesignBuilder | Commercial GUI over EnergyPlus | Fast project delivery, daylight/CFD, support |
So which should you use?
Because they share the EnergyPlus engine, results converge when inputs match — the choice is about workflow, not accuracy. Pick DesignBuilder for productive, deadline-driven project work; OpenStudio for automation and free, scriptable workflows; and EnergyPlus directly when you need fine-grained control. The right answer is usually "the one your team is fluent in and that fits the deliverable."
